How Russian MiG-31 jet intercepted US, British war planes near border - Defense Ministry

The Russian Defense Ministry on Thursday said its MiG-31 fighter jet intercepted two American and British planes over the waters of the Barents Sea.

According to the the ministry statement, the Russian air defenses on September 3 detected two air targets that were approaching the borders of the Russian state. A MiG-31 fighter belonging to the Northern Fleet took off with the aim of identifying them and preventing a violation of the borders of the Russian state.

The statement also added: “The Russian fighter crew identified the two air targets, as they were found to be an RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft for the United States Air Force and an R.1 sentinel reconnaissance aircraft for the British Air Force.”

They added that the Russian fighter returned to its permanent station, after the American and British planes changed course in the opposite direction, and the Ministry of Defense stressed that the flight of MiG-31 took place “in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace.”

In recent months, Russian forces have witnessed an intensification of reconnaissance flights by foreign countries near the borders of Russia.

A similar incident was announced earlier on Thursday, when a MiG-31 fighter intercepted a Norwegian patrol plane of the Orion type over the Barents Sea.

Adviser to Roscosmos' chief arrested on suspicion of passing information to NATO intelligence

Adviser to Roscosmos' chief arrested on suspicion of passing information to NATO intelligence

By Jonny Tickle

The adviser to the head of Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of treason.

Formerly a journalist, Ivan Safronov was working at Roscosmos for two months. According to Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, Safronov is accused of working for a foreign intelligence agency, and passing secret information about military technology and the Russian defense industry to an unspecified NATO country.

His arrest does not concern his current work with Roscosmos.

Earlier, media speculation linked his arrest to his previous reporting on the military-industrial complex, in particular, a story on an aircraft sale to Egypt, published in Russian newspaper Kommersant.

If charged and found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Born in Moscow in 1990, Safronov worked as a journalist for well-respected newspapers Kommersant and Vedomosti. In May, he was appointed adviser to Dmitry Rogozin, the director-general of Roscosmos.

Speaking to news agency TASS, Rogozin explained that Safronov “did not have access to classified information,” but said that he has known the ex-journalist for several years, and never doubted his “high professionalism and personal decency.”

Safronov left Kommersant in 2019 following a scandal, after writing an article about the possible resignation of Valentina Matviyenko, the head of Russia’s upper house of parliament, the Federation Council. A spokesman for the Federation Council called the piece a rumor. Following complaints by the paper’s ownership, Safronov resigned from the politics department, along with more than 10 other journalists.

“Whether I like it or not, it doesn’t matter: the publishing house has an owner, he has the right to determine who will work in his asset – Vanya Safronov or someone else,” he wrote.

HOW British warplanes intercept Russian long-range bombers flying in international airspace ?

HOW British warplanes intercept Russian long-range bombers flying in international airspace ?

Britain's RAF Voyager and two RAF Typhoons were scrambled from a number of different bases. The planes were responding to monitor Russian long-range aircraft flying in international airspace north of Scotland.

It comes after a spate of incidents involving Russian aircraft nearing UK or NATO airspace.

According to Reuters reports, the British Air Force on Friday, sent Typhoon fighters from Lossiemouth Air Force Base in Scotland to accompany Russian aircraft while flying in international airspace.

“The Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters took off to monitor the flight of a Russian long-range aircraft into international airspace in northern Scotland,” a statement from the British Air Force said.

It is worth noting that the Russian aircraft did not enter the flight information region in the United Kingdom, and therefore, “it was not required to intercept them.”

The Royal Air Force confirmed that on Friday's occasion the Russian aircraft turned away as they approached the UK Flight Information Region (FIR), north of the Scottish coast and as such no interception was needed.

The RAF stated the Russian aircraft was monitored throughout their flight.

And activity was coordinated closely with NATO allies, including the NATO Combined Air Operations Centre at Uedem in Germany.

Previously, reports said that three Tupolev-142 aircraft completed a planned flight over neutral waters from the Barents and Norwegian seas and the Northeast Atlantic.

Despite flying over the neutral zone, Russian aircraft were accompanied in some parts of the flight by Norwegian F-16 fighters and an F-35 aircraft.
