Belgium to gradually reopen businesses, schools from mid-May, says official

AFP: Businesses and schools in Belgium will gradually reopen from the middle of May, easing a lockdown imposed in mid-March to curb the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Sophie Wilmes announced Friday.

Businesses will restart from May 11 and schools from May 18, Wilmes said, adding the spread of the virus had slowed but pointing out the situation was still evovling. "Nothing is etched in stone," the premier added.

COVID-19: Belgium’s virus death toll tops 4,000

The number of newly confirmed coronavirus deaths in Belgium over the past 24 hours has reached 262, taking the total to 4,157, the national health ministry said Tuesday.

The number of new coronavirus cases recorded over the past 24 hours stands as low as 530, the lowest figures in the past few weeks. The total number of infections reached 31,119.

Belgium has been placed under a strict nationwide lockdown since March 14. It was initially planned to be in effect only until April 5, but on March 27 the authorities decided to extend it until April 19 with possible extension until May 3.

All educational, cultural and social facilities are shut down, students and schoolkids are practicing distance learning, all mass events are banned irrespective of the number of participants. All private companies are recommended to tell their employees to work from home, working hours of government agencies are cut down, while only emergency services operate without any changes.

Belgium also shut down its borders and banned any trips around the country, residents are only allowed to travel within their district of residence. Citizens are obliged to practice social distancing in transport and shops.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. According to the latest statistics, over 2,000,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 119,000 deaths have been reported. In addition, so far, over 453,000 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.

The confirmed number of deaths from the global coronavirus epidemic in Belgium increased sharply and passed the 1,000 mark on Thursday, health officials said.

According to the officials, death toll in the country of 11.4 million has doubled in the space of three days, in part because figures have been updated with a backlog of fatalities from retirement homes.

There have now been 1,001 deaths and 15,348 officially recorded cases since the start of the outbreak, officials told a daily news conference.

The Coronavirus outbreak which was first reported in the city of Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province, in December 2019 has now cases that have exceeded 930,000 globally, with the death toll hitting over 46,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

United States became the first nation with over 200,000 COVID-19 cases. Death toll in the country reached over 5,000. President Donald Trump has extended social distancing guidelines to April 30.

Italy's coronavirus lockdown measures will be extended to April 13.

Spain has crossed the threshold of 100,000 COVID-19 cases following the U.S. and Italy. The Spanish government said virus death toll now more than 10,000.

The death toll in in the country surges over 10,000 after a record 950 deaths in 24 hours, with the number of confirmed cases passing the 110,000 mark, the Spanish government says.

Spain has the world’s second-highest death toll after Italy, with the virus so far claiming 10,003 lives although the rate of new infections and deaths continued its downward trend, the health ministry figures show.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are set to begin on July 23, 2021, and will run until August 8. The Paralympic Games will run from August 24 to September 5.
