BREAKING: Norway cancels #NATO exercise Cold Response due to #coronavirus

Cold Response military exercise was meant to gather 15,000 NATO and allied soldiers, but Norway armed forces on Wednesday canceled its participation because of concerns over the new coronavirus that seems to be out of control. “The coronavirus is out of control,” the head of the army’s operations center, Rune Jakobsen, told reporters on March 11.

“We would rather preserve our army’s combat capabilities so we can support society in the turbulent period to come.”

As of March 10, there were 192 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Norway, according to World Health Organization data.

The exercise had initially been expected to gather troops from a dozen NATO or partner countries, including the United States, France, Germany, Britain, Belgium and Sweden, from March 12-18.

Organized by Norway in the far north, it was aimed at testing multinational capabilities in a high-intensity combat scenario in demanding winter conditions. The Norwegian army wanted to “avoid being a burden on the civilian healthcare system,” which had been expected to provide some personnel for the exercise, Jakobsen said.

Last week, the Norwegian army closed a military base in northern Norway after a soldier tested positive for the new coronavirus.

That is the only case detected in the Norwegian armed forces to date, but 240 soldiers are still in quarantine as a result, Jakobsen said.

On Saturday, Finland announced it would not be sending the 400 troops initially due to take part, because of the epidemic.

Last week NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance would press ahead with large-scale military exercises, including Defender Europe 20, which will see 20,000 troops deployed from the United States to Europe.

Since then, a number of non-NATO exercises have been cancelled in South Korea and Israel, and U.S.-led multinational exercises in Africa have been scaled back over the coronavirus concerns.

Reports: Nigerian Ambassador To Norway Facilitating Deportation Of Nigerians Without Any Offence

Reports: Nigerian Ambassador To Norway Facilitating Deportation Of Nigerians Without Any Offence

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari
A fresh report has emerged on how Nigeria’s Consul General in Sweden, who is also in charge of Norway, Adeyemi Oyetade, connives with foreign governments to ensure the deportation of Nigerians.

Nigerians in the Diaspora have continued to lament the lack of assistance by Nigerian embassies and Consul Generals and how the country’s ambassadors had on several occasions refused to come to their aid when in distress.

In July 2019, SaharaReporters had published how Titi Festos, a Nigerian living in Norway since 2016, was framed up and deported by the Norwegian Police.

Festos was denied help by the Nigerian embassy when he ran to the commission in Oslo, Norway, and eventually had his documents confiscated.

Recently, 12 Nigerian ladies trafficked to Lebanon for slavery have been left stranded by the Nigerian embassy when they ran there for help.

They are still stuck in Lebanon with no hope of how to return home as the embassy has refused to help.

As it stands, they are at risk of being re-captured by their traffickers and even killed for disclosing their secrets.

In this new case, a Nigerian, Abimbola Omolara Samuel, who has been living in Norway since 2013, is at risk of being deported as the Nigerian ambassador, Oyetade, has issued all document to fast-track her deportation to Nigeria.

Samuel, married with two kids, is afraid of losing her children, husband and business due to the deportation.

She said that the Norwegian Government had agreed to issue her required document to continue her stay in the country but it required the validation of Ambassador Oyetade, which has not been forthcoming.

Narrating her ordeal, she said that she had a meeting with the Norwegian Government and Oyetade where the ambassador identified her as a Nigerian and promised to facilitate her stay in the country but he backtracked after the meeting and issued travel documents for her to be deported.

“We were called into a meeting in Bergen (Norway) with the consular from Nigeria and three police officers.

“At the meeting, we got a good connection and I explained that I can’t leave my man and kids to go to Nigeria to file for a family reunion from there when I have my family here in Norway. He understood me and right in the meeting in front of the police, he promised that he would help me.

“Since I went to the meeting with my husband and two girls, the discussion was centred around applying for a reunion from Norway. We got good information about how we should do it and the meeting ended. We contacted our lawyer and we began the process.

“When I was to finalise the application, unknowingly to me, the consul general had gone behind our back to issue my deportation and travel documents to the police,” the woman narrated.

She lamented that if deported, she had no place in Nigeria and would not be able to unite with her family.

She berated the ambassador for failing to protect and assist Nigerians within his jurisdiction.

“What this means is that I have to leave where I have stayed for many years. I have to leave my house and family and stay in Nigeria where I have no father and mother or place to stay.

“Consular Adeyemi Oyetade in Stockholm, Sweden, has in his own way made it possible for the Norwegian Police to send me back to Nigeria.

“He put us in a situation where we all will be harmed and to think that this man occupies a position where he should help Nigerians,” she added.

Samuel and her husband are calling on the Nigerian Government as well as Nigerians in the Diaspora to look into her case and compel the ambassador to retract the travel documents he issued and stop her deportation as she has not committed any offence during her stay in the country for seven years.

Norwegian F-35s to patrol Iceland on their first NATO mission

Norwegian F-35s to patrol Iceland on their first NATO mission

A total of about 150 people will be dispatched to Iceland to operate four aircraft due to the advanced technology on Norway's new F-35 fighter jets.

Four Norwegian F-35 fighter jets have been commissioned by NATO to patrol the airspace over Iceland. This is the Norwegian F-35's first mission abroad, national broadcaster NRK reported.

“This means that we are ready for the mission both at home and abroad”, General Major and Chief of the Air Defence, Tonje Skinnarland said.

The first three aircraft arrived in the fall of 2017. In November, the jets were proclaimed “initially operational”. There are now 15 in Norway, and four of them are on their way to Iceland on assignment.
“I believe it's a very important mission, because it's a combat one. Finally, we get to perform a combat task, for which we have been training for a long time”, Lieutenant Colonel Ståle Nymoen and commander of the 332 Squadron at the Ørland aircraft base, said.

Norway's job in Iceland is called air policing. Iceland doesn't have an air defence of its own. Since 2006, when the Americans withdrew from the base they have had on the island for years, NATO members took over on a rotary basis. Now it's Norway's turn.

“We must be on standby with two planes and be able, by order of NATO, scramble and identify incoming planes, be it civilian, military, or other aircraft”, Nymoen said.

The mission will last three weeks, and to be on the safe side, the Air Force is bringing in extra crew this first time. A total of about 150 people will be dispatched to operate the four aircraft.
“We're bringing some extra crew for the first time, should something unexpected happen. More personnel are needed to support the F-35 than the F-16”, Nymoen explained, citing more demanding technology.

Norway has contributed to air policing missions in both Iceland and Lithuania. Last time Norwegian jets flew over Iceland was in 2016. Then it was F-16s carrying out the missions.

“It's a familiar mission, we've done it several times before with the F-16. The new thing is precisely the F-35, and not just the operation of the F-35 in the air, but the deployment of the F-35 force to another country”, Skinnarland said.

Oslo's F-16s are still used for Quick Reaction Alerts (QRA) in Norway. The plan is for the F-35 to take over completely. The new jets are expected to become fully operational by 2025.

A total of 52 F-35s were acquried as a replacement for Norway's ageing fleet of F-16s, which are to be phased out starting in 2019. Despite the official price tag of NOK 85.1 billion (over $9.2 billion), the newspaper Bergens Tidende estimated last year that it could reach as much as NOK 97 billion ($10.4 billion). The acquisition has been hailed as Norway's single most important military investment and dismissed as the nation's largest investment blunder.
