OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR TUESDAY 3RD AUGUST, 2021: PERFECT OBEDIENCE

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR TUESDAY 3RD AUGUST, 2021: PERFECT OBEDIENCE

THEME: PERFECT OBEDIENCE

MEMORISE:

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22

READ: 1 Samuel 15:22-23.

22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

MESSAGE:

It is needless to reiterate that perfect obedience to God and His word helps us set our priorities right. Sacrifice is good; God expects all His children to present their bodies as living sacrifices- holy and acceptable to Him (Romans 12:1).

However, God prefers obedience to sacrifice.

1 Samuel 15:22 says:

“……Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”

Obedience is an act of doing and being willing to do what one is told to. In a spiritual sense, obedience is total submission to the written and spoken word of God. Obedience is an express commandment of God. One distinguishing characteristic of all who are great in the service of the Lord is prompt obedience.

The Bible is full of stories of men and women who became great for God as a result of their complete and immediate obedience to the word of God. Heroes of obedience include Abraham, Joshua, Ruth, David, Elijah, Elisha and our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible says:

“ As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me. The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.”

Psalm 18:44-45

True and perfect obedience comes from a heart of love. It is real and not mere eye service.

Boldness is a vital ingredient of perfect obedience.

Peter and other disciples boldly confronted the Jewish elders when they chose to preach, saying they would rather please God and displease men.

“But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.”

Acts 4:19

Are you facing persecution because of your obedience to Christ? Don’t give up! Don’t compromise your stand. Obedience cannot be done halfway. Partial obedience is equal to disobedience.

Disobedience is rebellion, which is “as the sin of witchcraft” (1 Samuel 13:23). Partial obedience was the undoing of the first king of Israel- Saul.

Obedience starts with knowing the will of God then carrying out His directives promptly and completely.

KEY POINT:

Obedience is better than sacrifice.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:

Job 27-28.

HYMN 12: IN CHRIST ALONE.

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! – who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save:

Till on that cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied –

For every sin on Him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,

Light of the world by darkness slain:

Then bursting forth in glorious day

Up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,

For I am His and He is mine –

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the power of Christ in me;

From life’s first cry to final breath,

Jesus commands my destiny.

No power of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from His hand:

Till He returns or calls me home,

Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Word of wisdom: JUST A LITTLE MISTAKE!

Word of wisdom: JUST A LITTLE MISTAKE!

Ecclesiastes 10:10.

One night, just before the shopkeeper closed for the day, a dog came into the shop, having a bag in its mouth. The bag had a list of items to be bought and money so the shopkeeper took the money and kept the items in the bag.

Immediately, The dog picked up the bag of items and left. The shopkeeper was surprised and went behind the dog to see who the owner was.The dog waited at the bus stop, After sometime, a bus came and the dog got into the bus. As soon as the conductor came, it moved forward to show his neck belt which had money and the address as well. The conductor took the money and put the ticket in his neck belt again.

When it reached the destination, the dog went to the front and wagged his tail indicating that he wanted to get down, the moment the bus stopped, it got down. The shopkeeper was still following it. The dog knocked on the door of a house with its legs. Its owner came from inside and beat it with a stick.

The shocked shopkeeper asked him "why are you beating the dog?", to which the owner replied, "he disturbed my sleep. It could have taken the keys with it."

This is the truth of life. There is no end to the expectations people have from you. The moment you go wrong, they start pointing at our mistakes.

All the good done in the past are quickly forgotten. Any small mistake committed gets magnified. You can do 100 things for people but once you do a little mistake they forget all that you have done for them.

They capitalize on that your little mistake to hold it against you whereas they themselves ain't perfect. The owner of the dog had no idea of what his dog went through to get those stuffs yet instead of appreciation it got beating.

Most people have no idea of what you have gone through in life to make them happy or please them but at the end of it all, instead of them appreciating you or complement you they end up looking for faults and mistakes from you just to discredit you. This is the kind of society we live in...

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR MONDAY 12TH OF APRIL, 2021: WHY WORRY WHEN YOU CAN PRAY

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR MONDAY 12TH OF APRIL, 2021: WHY WORRY WHEN YOU CAN PRAY

THEME: WHY WORRY WHEN YOU CAN PRAY

MEMORISE:

But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. Acts 9:40

READ: John 11:41-44

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that Thou hast heard Me.

42 And I knew that Thou hearest Me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me.

43 And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

MESSAGE:

In Philippians 4:6, the Bible enjoined believers to avoid worry, but to rather present their requests to God through supplication and thanksgiving. The result of this spiritual exercise is in the next verse:

"And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

We cannot do without prayers. lf Jesus as powerful as He is, could do nothing without prayer during his earthly ministry, then every Christian must have an effective prayer life. When Jesus got to the tomb of Lazarus, He did the same thing Philippians 4:6 commands us to do: with thanksgiving, He prayed and made His request known to God. Apostle Peter also engaged the power of prayer when confronted with the loss of a member of the Church in Lydda. That prayer of faith brought Tabitha back to life, to the glory of God. (Acts 9:36-40).

I travelled to my hometown not long after I was ordained as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. On getting there, the villagers prevailed upon me to look into how the deplorable road leading to the community could be fixed. Humanly speaking, it was an expensive project for a pastor of my means to undertake. So, I looked up to God in prayer, like the Psalmist said in Psalm 121:1-2. A few weeks later, the Lord answered my prayer. He moved the government of the time to award a contract that got the road fixed.

The reason many children of God do not have answers to their wishes is that they have not asked. James 4:2 says:

"Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not."

Beloved, God is concerned about your needs. Don't be envious of others who are getting answers. Only prayer can solve your problems. Like the elder brother of the prodigal son, many Christians are zealous in the work of God but fail to make their requests known to Him. The elder brother accused his father of being partial whereas alI he needed to do was ask, because alI the father had was his (Luke 15:31). Don't short-change yourself. Ask in faith today!

ACTION POINT:

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you (Matthew 7:7).

HYMNAL: Pass me not, o gentle Saviour.

1. Pass me not, o gentle Saviour,

Hear my humble cry;

While on others Thou art calling,

Do not pass me by.

Refrain:

Saviour, Saviour,

Hear my humble cry,

While on others Thou art calling,

Do not pass me by.

2. Let me at Thy throne of mercy

Find a sweet relief;

Kneeling there in deep contrition,

Help my unbelief.

3. Trusting only in Thy merit,

Would I seek Thy face;

Heal my wounded, broken spirit,

Save me by Thy grace.

4. Thou the spring of all my comfort,

More than life to me,

Whom have I on earth beside Thee,

Whom in Heav’n but Thee.
