YORUBA IN PORT HARCOURT AND RIVERS STATE POLITICS

I have effectively followed the political happenings and elections in Rivers State since 1999 till date. Throughout this period of about 24 years, never for once have I seen the “Yoruba interference” in the politics of Rivers State.

It’s no longer news that the Yoruba people have a high population in the State, a population comprising of different professionals contributing positively to the growth and economy of Port Harcourt and Rivers State.

But with their valued contributions to the economy of the State and high population in the area, the Yorubas never brag about their accomplishments, achievements and establishments in the City and never uses same to denigrate their host communities and boast that they will determine the political future of their landlords and choose who becomes their next lawmakers and Governor of the State. They don’t even print campaign posters and contest elections in the State, even when they are at liberty to.

I have never seen the Yorubas engage in tactless political activities in Rivers State or making reckless political statements during local elections in the State or anywhere outside South-West, Nigeria. Also, I have never seen them brag that they made a candidate win an election in Rivers State or anywhere outside SW. even when they obviously contributed.

During elections in Rivers State, the Yorubas who are registered to vote comport themselves, mind their business throughout the campaign period and go to their polling units to cast their votes for their preferred candidates and quietly leave their polling units after doing so. In fact, the only time you will see Yoruba people during campaigns here is when political parties or candidates have called the Yoruba community for a campaign meeting to seek for their votes and support.

This behaviour of one of the most industrious, respected and celebrated ethnic group in the world is possible not just because they are one of the most educated people in Nigeria, but also, because they have a culture of respect imbibed in all sons and daughters of Yoruba in and outside Yoruba land, the culture of respect called Omoluabi.

Throughout my years of political participation and observation in Rivers State, the attitude of the Yorubas in Port Harcourt is the direct opposite of that of some others who not only behave like lost and uncivilized entities without any form of education and culture, but are also brash, tactless, reckless, noisy, disrespectful and boastful. Who after selling fake oraimo cords in one kiosk at Rebisi, always brag about the imaginary powers they have as tenants to determine for their landlord, how and when he should impregnate his wife. A true definition of uninvited tombofly and meddlesome interloper.

As a man of independent thoughts who is also cultured (by virtue of being an Ikwerre man) and appreciates good things, I must commend the Yoruba people for maintaining high standards of respect for others and promoting the principles of Omoluabi. Nigeria would be a better place if we all promote our uniqueness and respect our differences.

Dear Yoruba people, please keep it up, you have my respect ✊
