Rome's Meeting: What Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz as Russian Putin is due visit to Israel

We discussed Iran and Syria, and emphasized the need to withdraw Iran from Syria, and the fact that Israel will continue to work to safeguard its security interests and prevent Iran's consolidation in Syria, with great care not to harm the Russian forces there.


On December 6 in Rome, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a meeting with Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz on the sidelines of the international conference, The Mediterranean: Roman Dialogue. Russian foreign ministry said in a press release.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is schedule to visit the state of Israel in January 2020.

Israeli FM also attested to the meeting when he wrote on his verified Twitter handle @Israel_katz that he met in Rome with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and congratulated the good relations between Israel and Russia. 

He said he brought up the topic of Naama Issachar, expressing hope that President Putin would accept the pardon requests he had made, and asked to increase the frequency of meetings between Naama and her family.

He added: "We discussed Iran and Syria, and emphasized the need to withdraw Iran from Syria, and the fact that Israel will continue to work to safeguard its security interests and prevent Iran's consolidation in Syria, with great care not to harm the Russian forces there.

Russia's source also confirmed that Sergey Lavrov and Israel Katz discussed a number of topical matters concerning bilateral affairs in the context of the preparations for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Israel in January 2020. 

They reaffirmed their striving to continue active political dialogue.

They also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East focusing on the current situation in Syria and the state of affairs in the Palestinian-Israeli peace settlement.


On the President Putn's visit to Israeli, Katz said: "I welcomed President Putin's expected arrival in Israel in January for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and the inauguration of the monument to the Russian fallen in Leningrad's defense."
