Middle East monitor reports that the head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, yesterday reaffirmed the movement’s support for Jordan in the face of “foreign pressures, especially American and Israeli pressure, aimed at changing the region’s geopolitics”.
According to Haniyeh, "Hamas will not accept any solution to the Palestinian cause at the expense of Jordan and its sovereignty”, stressing that the “deal of the century” targets Palestine, Jordan and the Palestinian refugees.
He reiterated the movement’s rejection of “settling the Palestinian refugees in their places of residence, especially at the expense of Jordan’s sovereignty”.
Last month, Jordan’s King Abdullah II said pressure is being exercised on him personally to change his country’s position regarding the occupied city of Jerusalem, adding that he will not change his position and that the Jordanian people stand with him on this issue.
“We in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have a historic duty towards Jerusalem and the holy sites there. Jerusalem is a red line, and my people stand with me,” he said.
Later on March, the king cancelled a planned visit to Romania after the Romanian prime minister pledged to transfer the country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
