Press Release: ENDSARS MOVEMENT, OSUN STATE CONDEMNS THE LOOTING AND BOGGLING OF PROPERTY; CALLS FOR CALMNESS AND REITERATES CONTINUATION OF PEACEFUL PROTEST

Profile picture

It is not a disappointment from our end the infiltration of us again by hoodlums whom we are convinced were agents of the state at our protest of yesterday, 23rd October 2020.

Since we resumed our peaceful demonstration earlier in the week and precisely  Monday after the attack on us and the Governor, Gboyega Oyetola last week Saturday, we have been able to organize and coordinate the protesters who have started with us ab initio.

Until yesterday, the protest has been civil till some boisterous-looking individuals came in  claiming to have come to ensure the "safety" of some government officials.

We became confused seeing this strange forces trooping in from different angle with dreadful countenances that made us concludes that they clearly had unfriendly missions.

The mood of the protesters immediately went cold as safety became the priority giving the ugly experience we had on Saturday, 17th of October, 2020 when the governor came.

It is so disheartening to learn that the Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, Lekan Badmus had been sent by the state government to come and dialogue with the protesters.

We are convinced he had come in the company of thugs to bully and coerce the protesters into calling off the protest.

The public display of dangerous weapons by these thugs sent many legitimate protesters away from the barricade, and as the atmosphere was becoming too tensed beyond what we could bear, we decided to boycott the protest, and told all protesters to leave the protest ground to safety.

In unequivocal term, we condemn intimidating our barricade with thugs in disguise for negotiations by the government officials.

It is safe for us to say the unhealthy patronage of thugs had motivated hungry citizens in search of Covid-19 palliatives to loot and boggle people's property. We hereby condemn in strong term the looting and destruction of properties across the state and we appeal to the youths of Osun State to remain calm and law abiding as we continue to peacefully and constructively demand accountability from the state government and the country at large.

In fact, to disassociate ourselves from the looters, we implore the State Security Agents to investigate and arrest whoever is culpable and in support, we offer to provide for the State a legal representative to try these set of people. We have withdrawn to drawing board since Friday morning of 23th Oct. and we will resume to the barricade once we fine-tune our plans.

We make bold to assert that our protest continues but just as we intelligently withdrew to the drawing board, as it has been perceived that we have been heavily infiltrated by unwanted forces sent to cause chaos and distabilise our peaceful and well-organised demonstration. We intend to maintain the peaceful nature of our protest and continue with the demonstration until our voices are heard.

Kindly disregard any news that says we have called off protest, Nigeria is sitting on a gun powder and we are at the receiving end. Protest being called off would amount to the betrayal of our collective interest as a people, we should all be engaging in demonstration till we achieve a Nigeria that works for all.

Signed:

Olawale Bakare
