June 12: AAC says more still need to be done to make Democracy real in Nigeria

The African Action Congress (AAC) has said more works are still needed to be done to enthrone real democracy in Nigeria.

Speaking to reporters in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, AAC Chairman in the state comrade Ogunlana Rotimi Jacob said "aside that fact that our elections are nothing to celebrate today comparing to the June 12 1993 election."

"Real democracy was murdered in Nigeria with the annulment of that election and eventual questionable death of Chief M K O Abiola in federal government custody in 1998."

"Democracy goes beyond that, it entails legitimacy and rules of law, popular support and popular participation, constitutionalism, separation of powers, check and balances and good governance which are very lacking today in our politics."

"Electoral and institutional corruptions, manipulations, monetisation and vote buying have taken away democracy from the people as poverty ravaged the land."

Oyo state chairman of the party opined that the independent of the Judiciary and the Legislature from the executive are paramount to ensure democracy succeed and protection the rights of citizens from abuses of power as witnessed under Major Gen. Muhammadu buhari led federal government where AAC presidential flag bearer in the 2019 general elections Omoyele Sowore was incarcerated for months against several court decisions calls for actions.

On Oyo state politics, Comrade Rotimi said while the welfare of the state workers by the Governor Seyi Makinde led government in the state is commendable, it does not worth any celebration, adding that AAC intends to do more for the workers in the country.

He however said the current administration in the state has done well for not abandoning the uncomplete projects of the ousted APC administration in the state.

He charged the Oyo state government to do more in the area of security and job creations.

"Poverty and insecurity are the twin evils that may wreck this country, he said.
