According to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University, the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the United States has topped 40,000.
It showed the number of fatalities countrywide at 40,585, with almost half of them in New York.

However, Governor Andrew Cuomo said the coronavirus curve is "on the descent" after hospitalisations and deaths continue to fall.
As of Sunday 19 April, more than 2.3 million people have been infected and more than 164,000 people have died globally.
