COVID-19: Death toll in US grows by 1,973 in past day — Johns Hopkins University

In America, at least 1,973 people in the US succumbed to the Coronavirus Pandemic in the last 24 hours, topping Tuesday's count by 34 more deaths.

The record number of COVID-19 associated deaths has been recorded in the United States on April 8 with 1,973 new fatalities in the past day, Johns Hopkins University said on Wednesday.

A total of 430,376 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the United States so far. The death toll reached 14,739, and 23,707 people recovered.

The previous record of over 1,700 fatalities in one day was registered on Tuesday, April 7.

On April 4, around 1,400 fatalities were reported in one day.

In the US, New York remains the hardest-hit state, with the number of coronavirus cases there nearing a staggering 150,000.

US has the highest number of the COVID-19 infections globally. While the center of the Covid-19  pandemic long ago shifted from China to Europe, where Italy holds the record of the most fatalities to date – over 17,600 – the US is not too far behind.

According to the latest Global statistics, over 1,500,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 82,000 deaths have been reported while over 300,000 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.

Statisticians believe that the US is about to hit the peak of its Covid-19 outbreak, which could come as early as this week, according to recently updated projections by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. The IHME predicted that the peak will come on April 12, and may result in as many as 2,212 deaths on that day alone, but the rate is expected to slow down soon after.

US President Trump, however, has insisted that the growing share of US cases in the worldwide tally is due to rigorous testing rather than to a failure to contain the outbreak.

Trump said US has tested more Covid-19 suspects than any other nation.
