Iran reports 141 new virus deaths, raising total to 2,898

Europe sends medical gear to Iran through first sanction-bypass deal: Berlin

Iran on Tuesday said 141 more have died from the novel coronavirus, raising the official toll in one of the world's worst-affected countries to 2,898.

`Health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour said 3,111 new infections have been confirmed over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 44,606.

He said 3,703 of those hospitalised are in a critical condition and 14,656 have recovered.

Meanwhile, EU nations which are signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers have delivered medical goods to Iran in the first transaction under the Instex mechanism set up to evade American sanctions on Tehran, the German foreign ministry said Tuesday.

"France, Germany and the United Kingdom confirm that INSTEX has successfully concluded its first transaction, facilitating the export of medical goods from Europe to Iran. These goods are now in Iran," the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier in the month of March, Russian foreign ministry alleged that American unilateral sanctions against Iran and other economic measures and threats of war by the US are impeding the Tehran's efforts at curbing the spread of the COVID-19 that has killed nearly 3,000 Persians.

The Inability of the France, Germany and the UK to make real and fulfill their Instex mechanism pledged to help Iran evade the US sanctions has been one of the major reasons Tehran scaled back its commitment to the nuclear deal but said all its steps are reversible.
