U.S. sees Chinese communist party as 'central threat of our times,' Pompeo says

London:  U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday said China is the central threat of our times and the United States and its allies must ensure they have the military and technological power to ensure that this century is governed by Western principles.

“While we still have to be enormously vigilant about terror … the Chinese Communist Party presents the central threat of our times,” Pompeo said on Thursday.

Pompeo who is in London and planned to visit Ukraine said UK has taken a risk by refusing to exclude China’s Huawei from 5G networks but the United States will work with London to resolve their differences.

“When you allow the information of your citizens or the national security information of your citizens to transit a network that the Chinese Communist Party has a legal mandate to obtain it creates risk,” Pompeo told reporters.

“I am very confident that our two nations will find a way to work together to resolve this difference,” Pompeo said, adding that the Five-Eyes intelligence alliance would remain.

Spokesperson to the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain’s decision to allow China’s Huawei to have a role in its 5G networks does not affect the country’s ability to securely share intelligence data.

Pompeo, who arrives in London later on Wednesday, said American information would only be allowed to pass across trusted networks.
