Russia Foreign Minister Lavrov calls for US-Iranian de-escalation after downing of plane

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday urged ‘de-escalation’ of tensions between Iran and the United States after Iranian forces accidentally downed a Ukrainian passenger jet.

“The tragedy with a Ukraine Airlines plane is a very serious red flag and signal to start working on de-escalation and not on constant threats and combat aviation flights in this region,” Lavrov said.

"Western countries have been dominating in the world for at least five hundred years. This era is now receding in the past. It is time to share power and influence and to make agreements with new strong players." Lavro said during a program organised by the MGIMO University to marked its 75th anniversary.

Lavrov reviews results of 2019 foreign policy in annual address to the press in Moscow . The senior official as expected, touches upon the situation in Ukraine and Syria, bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington as well as with European nations.

His positions on the acute issue of the recent tensions between Tehran and Washington, following the assassination of Iranian IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani and Iran's subsequent missile attack on American facilities in Iraq are based on deescalation of tensions and the use of threats, hoping for a diplomatic solutions.

Moscow is ready to contribute to launching dialogue between Washington and Tehran if the sides show interest in this, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference in Moscow echoing his Tuesday call.

On Tuesday Press conference, Lavro said: "We are calling on the US and Iran to show restraint and solve all problems through dialogue."

"Many tried and continue trying to contribute to launching contacts between the United States and Iran to ease tensions," he said, stressing: "[We] are also ready to help if the sides show a real interest in this."

He emphasized that Moscow was not going to meddle in the ties between the United States and Iran. "By meddling, as you said, in US-Iranian relations I mean some physical actions.".
