Zamfara: the trilogy of banditry, dysfunctional system and incompetence in governance at all levels

The misery in Zamfara and beyond is the direct consequence of the negative interactive and interrelated balance/unbalance of three main equations. Banditry, dysfunctional system and incompetence in governance at all levels. Religion has no part in it. In fact it's the lack of religion that has untamed the lying situation and woke up the sleeping dogs.

Until quickly arrested, it will spread like a malignancy and Nigeria as a corporate existence may be quickly jeopardized at a catalytic pace.

Banditry:
This is a social malady that has brewed over many decades slowly, but has became exacerbated - more especially recently because, the system is failing and true governance is decaying. The main causes of the banditry are poor or lack of education, poverty in the mist of wealth explosion. These are now compounded by the spread of drugs and the propagation of social vices through the social Media (which has become the moral compass of people who have otherwise no means to have role models in life, who are constantly bombarded with this dirty stuff by the hour). It has created a Frankenstein MONSTER that has nor fear of divinity or destiny. Bandits want a life now or never. Its a vicious circle of interdependent factors. Until the chain reaction is broken, the nation will remain in the bush until there is a generational change.

System dysfunction:

The nation as a whole is undergoing rapid metamorphic demographic changes, yet the existing structures, infrastructure, legal framework and constitutional provisions are quite inadequate and insufficient. There is no oxygen in the cabin, passengers are choking and suffocating to death, it's only the pilot on oxygen, who may survive but land with dead passengers. Nigeria is like an orphan at adolescence who has no father to buy him/her new clothes and have to manage with the old, tattered and tight ones. Neither healthy nor suitable for the weather nor beautiful for presentation. Nigeria needs men of vision, wisdom and compassion to sculpture a new nation that can accommodate all and protect all individual and communities. The nation needs to restructure immediately. Some degree of autonomy, local policing and freedom of movement or settlement must be entrenched.

Our democracy must evolve too. An electoral college is mandatory, otherwise, people who celebrate 'victory' by drinking and bathing is contaminated gutter will hold the nation to ransom. No where in developed societies they dictate the piper. Where there are direct polls, the populace is largely educated. But in Nigeria, where political leaders deliberately shun debates and intellectual scrutiny because the electorates are largely illiterates, electorates that cannot vote by reading words but by the symbol of political parties, such a choice of a system is pernicious or self injurious to say the least.

It gives room for vote buying, rigging and hampers modern electoral reforms. All these explains why we have incompetence in governance at all levels. And the vicious circle continues.

A word is enough for the wise.

May Allah solace the victims and protect us all from all Evil. Amin
