United Airlines EMERGENCY: Flight from Heathrow to Chicago declares mid-air alert

UNITED Airlines Flight UA929 has declared an emergency just minutes after taking off from Heathrow Airport.

The plane, a 26-year-old Boieing 767, was just 20 minutes into its journey to the United States when pilots issued the call to Air Traffic Control. The aircraft had just began to fly over Newport in South Wales before making a U-Turn over the Bristol Channel. No reason has been given for the emergency.

Flight UA929 took off at 9.02am BST and has due to land in Chicago at 11.15am local time.

Airport Webcams reported "smoke and fumes in the cabin".

It is currently heading back to Heathrow at 29,000 ft.

One Twitter user wrote the issue had "now cleared but best to return".

However, Dax Ward, who says he is a passenger on the flight, dismissed the claims via Twitter.

He said: “There was no smoke or fumes; I am on it.”
The pilot was said to have "squawked" a 7700 which means a general emergency
